World Issues Group

Our small but active group has developed from the traditional Church of Scotland model for a local congregational World Mission committee. However, we decided a few years ago that we wanted to broaden the scope of our discussions to include wider issues, such as trade justice and justice in its widest sense, the plight of persecuted Christians, the environment, and other issues closer to home – and to reflect our individual interests in and support for a wide range of Christian charities. That is why we chose to call ourselves the World Issues Group rather than World Mission Group.

The work we do as a group is in addition to, and supportive of, other congregational World Mission activities such as the TOGETHER project, Christian Aid, TEARfund (including Children@risk), Meals for Malawi, Blythswood, Samaritans Purse, Presbytery Mission Partner (Glen Lund in Kitwe, Zambia).

As a group we do not promote fund raising, although some of us individually and wearing different hats do, and we all actively support many fund raising activities.  We see our main function as one of raising awareness of world issues within the congregation – through a large notice board in the hall, articles in OUTREACH magazine, and occasionally in the weekly order of service, and by taking part in special services.  We meet on the first Friday of the month for an hour to exchange news, pray over current issues and plan future activities, events, services.  Our meetings take place during the monthly Guild coffee mornings, as we think that also gives us a chance to raise awareness during chats with friends and strangers after our meeting.

When do we meet?

First Friday of month 11.00am to 12 noon

in St. Andrew's Parish Church Hall

Downies Wynd

Check the Calendar or latest weekly Order of Service in our Downloads page for meeting information.
